Life Lessons and Leadership Miss Donsbach’s 5th Grade Classroom hosted Kris Guerrero, a 5th degree black belt, from the Leaders for Life Martial Arts Academy in Champaign, IL. Mr. Guerrero came to talk to the students about developing leadership skills, how to positively manage stress, how to have a positive attitude, how to face adversity, and he encouraged creating goals. He discussed several different life lessons to live by: Telling yourself “You can do it” Remembering to “Never Give Up” Always saying “Yes I Can” to challenging situations Mr. Guerrero reminded the students that leaders must have balance, get things done right away, they should ATA (Always Take Action), they should push away bad habits, and always show respect. Along with his discussion, the students learned several simple karate techniques and movements, and they watched Lyle perform one section of his black belt kata (detailed choreographed pattern of martial arts movements) 5th grader Lyle Shine assisted Mr. Guerrero during the presentation. Lyle has been training with Leaders for Life for about 7 years and is currently a 1st degree black belt. Cody Vancil showed discipline and good listening skills during the presentation, so he was chosen to “break the board” at the end of the presentation.
