What is the current issue at the school?
The main portion of the building is experiencing a boiler issue involving a pilot valve that caused a buildup of natural gas. This created a potential fire hazard, and the system was shut down for safety.
When was the problem discovered?
Staff noticed the issue as the school day began on Friday, December 5. Technicians were called immediately and worked throughout the day. Due to the lack of heat, students were dismissed early that afternoon.
Why was school moved to remote learning?
Because the boiler could not safely remain in operation, and repairs are still ongoing, the district implemented a remote learning day to ensure the comfort and safety of students and staff.
When will students return to in-person learning?
Students will return once repairs are fully completed and the system has been thoroughly tested for safety. At this time, we do not yet have a confirmed timeline, as additional issues could be identified during the repair process.
Does the Village of Bement boil order affect the school?
Once the boiler is safely repaired, we will be able to operate our steam system even while the village remains under a boil order. Bottled water is available for students and staff when we return.
How does remote learning work during this closure?
Elementary students complete work packets and participate in online group sessions.
Middle and High School students follow a schedule of short live classes in the morning with independent work and teacher support in the afternoon.
Assignments are posted by 8:30 a.m., attendance is taken, and accommodations are provided for students with limited internet access.
Why does the district use remote learning instead of traditional snow days?
Remote learning is part of the district’s Emergency Remote E-Learning Plan and is used when school cannot safely be open due to weather, utility failures, or building issues.
Are after-school and evening activities still happening?
Yes. All evening activities will continue as scheduled because the gym is on a separate heating system and remains fully operational.
Were students able to pick up Chromebooks?
Yes. The building was opened Sunday evening so students could retrieve Chromebooks if needed for remote learning.
How will families be updated?
Families will continue to receive updates through normal school communication channels as repair progress is made and when a return-to-school date is confirmed.
Who can I contact with questions?
Families with questions may contact the school office or their building principal.
